When moving house, it can be hard to leave a nurtured garden behind, and while it's impossible to take the garden with you, Clifton Nurseries is offering a propagation service which means you can hold on to well-loved plants.
The expertise offered in this service can also be useful for less-experienced gardeners who wish to preserve precious plants but aren't sure when or how to take the cutting. As Tad Paluchowski (managing director at Clifton Nurseries) told us, customers using the service can talk to staff to determine what the plant is, and why it needs to be propagated (for example if it's too old to move or if the plant is dying).
Once identified, it's easier to determine which type of cutting will give the greatest chance for success and what time of year the cutting should be sent to Clifton Nurseries.
Once cuttings have been checked and confirmed for viability at the nursery, the cuttings are placed in plug cells until they begin to root. When established, they are put into 9cm (3in) pots to continue rooting for healthy growth.
Customers pay £15 per plant when rooted plants are received six months to a year later. Propagation by Post is based at Clifton Nurseries, 5a Clifton Villas, London W9 2PH (tel: 0207 289 6851). Established plants can either be collected in person or will be posted.
