New peat-free plug plants

January 08: Jean Stowe catches up with KinderGarden and its latest peat-free plug plants in eco-friendly pots

KinderGarden peat-free plugs

'A peat-free plug has been developed where the compost is held together with a glue-like compound.'

KinderGarden's young plants were originally sold in net pots, then in 2007 they were grown in biodegradable rice husk pots. Now, a peat-free plug has been developed where the compost is held together with a glue-like compound. The plugs appear in a paper sleeve, which also serves as the label.

The Gold range has a RRP of £1.10 and the Blue range 75p. Ian Cole, general manager of Kindergarden Plants, said: 'We give a suggested retail price, but it should be noted that garden centres set their own prices; many pitch the individual charge higher, but offer a good multi-buy deal.'

KinderGarden peat-free plug plants go on sale from late January 2008. Call 01406 371200 for stockists.
