Veg planting calendar at a glance

Elisabeth Arter shows when and how to grow some of her favourite easy veg


Mixed veg
Grow your own veg


'Start parsley 'Favorit' or 'Moss Curled' from seed in modules or in the open from February.'


Very easy crops
Broad bean 'Aquadulce Claudia':
Grow from seed on open, well-drained soil in November.

Broad bean 'Jubilee Hysor':
Grow from seed in the ground, or in modules to plant out from February to March.

Courgette 'Parthenon' or 'Tosca':
Sowing beans
Sow beans direct
Grow from seed in pots from April to May. Plant out on good soil or in tubs from May to June.

Garlic 'Solent Wight':
Plant out individual cloves so that just the tips show from September to March.

Leeks 'Bandit' or 'Carlton':
Start from seed sown in modules in March. Plant in the open from June to July.

New potatoes 'Swift' or 'Rocket':
Start from hens-egg-size tubers. Plant in the open ground or in a cold frame from March to April.

Onion 'Centurion' or 'Sturon':
Start from 1-1½cm- (½in)- diameter sets. Plant so just the tips show in April.

Parsnip 'Countess' or 'Gladiator':
Start from seed only. Sow direct in late March to April to stay in place until dug up.

Radish 'French Breakfast':
Start from seed only. Sow in succession on fertile soil in late February.

Shallot 'Golden Gourmet':
Plant bulbs in the ground at 15cm (6in) apart from January to March.

Swiss chard 'Lucullus':
Start from seed. Thin and transplant to 15-20cm (6-8in) apart from April to August.


Fairly easy crops
Beetroot 'Boltardy' or 'Red Ace':
Start from seed. Thin and transplant to 8cm (3in) in late March to early June.

Cabbage (many varieties available):
Start from seed. Sow in modules indoors or in a seed bed outside from February to August. Plant out in the open from March to October.

Carrot 'Early Nantes 2' or 'Bangor':
Start from seed only. Sow thinly in shallow drills in the open, or in tubs from March to June.

Cucumber 'Swing':
Start from seed sown in a propagator in April. Plant, ideally under cover, in May to June.

Lettuce 'Little Gem' or 'Tom Thumb':
Start from seed sown in modules to transplant in succession from March to June.

Loose-leaf type or mixed leaves:
Start from seed sown in modules to transplant in succession in February to March and from June to October.

Parsley 'Favorit' or 'Moss Curled':
Start from seed in modules or in the open. Thin to 15cm (6in) in February to July.

Runner bean 'Enorma' and 'White Lady':
Sow from seed in modules or in the open. Thin to 15cm (6in) in April to May. Plant out in May to early July.

Sprouting broccoli 'Claret' or 'Redhead':
Grow from seed and sow in a seed bed in late May. Plant out from July to early August.

Sweetcorn 'Lark'or 'Swift':
Sow from seed in modules in May. Plant in the open from late May to early June.

Tomato 'Ferline', 'Ildi' or 'Piccolo':
Grow from seed in the warmth from February to April. Plant in the greenhouse from April to May, or in the open from the end of May to June.
