I wonder if anyone can help me before I do the wrong thing. I have a woodland bed full of Violets. Unfortunately the soil is very shallow as it's built over the base of an old drive and the subsoil is VERY stoney. I cannot dig out the subsoil because of extensive tree roots, so I intend to deepen the bed by top dressing with more soil and compost. My question is, can I bury the Violets in the hope that they will re-admerge in the spring, or do I have to dig them all up and replant, that would be a major undertaking considering the large spread I have.

 Thanks, Dave
