I volunteer with a Wildlife Rangers group and this year the kids grew some veg in the plot we have at the centre. However, the success rate was low as their beans got eaten by rabbits and the potatoes were dug up and harvested by someone else! Has anyone got any advice on what we can grow over the winter. We have six plots about 1.2 x 1.2m (4 x 4ft) each.

Mary: I suggest you plant some broad beans in November. The variety 'Aquadulce' is very hardy and will give you an earlier crop than from a spring sowing. You will, however, need to protect the crop against rabbits. Make a mini
tunnel out of chicken wire and peg it down carefully over the row.
You could also plant some garlic. Traditionally, this is planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest. Perhaps the rabbits might not like it!
