I am about to dig up my potatoes. What veg can I plant there now to harvest in springtime? Can I plant seeds, or do I have to get young plants or sets? As a newcomer to gardening, and vegetable growing in particular, I would appreciate any help I can get.

Elisabeth: After you have dug your potatoes, the ground should be ideal for planting autumn onion sets, such as 'Radar', in late September or early October – and at the same time you can put in cabbage plants for cutting as
spring greens, or a bit later on as full-size cabbages.
In early November, I always sow some broad beans 'Aquadulce Claudia' or 'Super Aquadulce'. Another suggestion is a lettuce, such as 'Valdor', to overwinter and cut next spring.
