Q&A Lawns: Red threads

I have, or had, a one-year-old superb turf lawn. Last week I found substantial red-thread invasion after mowing . The chemicals advised in my gardening book are now banned. Please advise treatment and prevention.

Julie Hollobone: As you most probably know, red thread is a fungal disease of turf that is often caused by lack of nitrogen and humid conditions. There is no quick treatment to control your red thread, but it doesn't usually go so far as to kill the grass.

the only treatment is to encourage a good strong, healthy lawn so that the grass can shrug off the disease. Try a nitrogen feed, while the weather is still relatively wet, and regular mowing to keep the grass strong with the box on. Switch to an autumn feed in September to give your lawn more resilience to the low temperatures of winter. It may also be worthwhile adopting an autumn maintenance routine of scarifying.

We have just returfed our small garden, having laid top soil first, raked and levaled the area well, removing all weeds etc, and watered continually thoroughly. However after 4 days parts are yellowing and we don't know what to do to encourage it to take. We lay the turf as soon as we got it and it was of good quality. There was a very small lawn in the garden before, but we needed to extend the area of grass so started fresh.
Any advice please for complete lawn novices.
