Q&A Lawns: Ryegrass

Last year I had a beautiful lawn, but the hot summer sun scorched it in a couple of places. I purchased the hardwearing grass seed which contained ryegrass and I have regretted it ever since.

I am having to mow my lawn twice as often now, as the seedheads on the ryegrass really spoil the lawn. How can I overcome this problem, apart from having to relay new turf or mowing my lawn three or four times a week! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Liz Dobbs: It sounds like the seed you purchased had a ryegrass variety in it that wasn't suitable. Some grass seed types are agricultural, i.e. for feeding animals, and bred to shoot up quickly to provide bulk. There are special dwarf rye grass varieties bred for lawns that stay fairly short, but branch out so they form a dense sward. Sadly, the information given on packets is often sparse.

What you do now? I would say it would be better to start again with a more suitable mix, taking into account how big your lawn is. A grass specialist might be able to recommend some other approaches.

I dont know if anyone can offer me advice on my poor lawn. I reliad it last year after removing all traces of the previous lawn. The ground was levelled reasonably well and reasonably loose. However, I now have a very poor lawn to show for my efforts across quite a large area of garden. There are more bare patches than there is grass and the ground is incredibly hard in the summer. I believe the soil is of a clay type and i did not put a layer of topsoil on before laying the lawn, but it did look reasonable enough at the time.

Have you any advice on how i can rescue this disaster? I dont want to have to relay it all over again if i can help it but i do need to do something if the finished product will ever look anything like a lawn.

Regards

Steve ...
