I noticed today that the onions I've planted are going to seed. Any reasons why they are doing this?

Elisabeth Arter: Sometimes onions grown from sets do send up flower stems. When this happens, break off the flower buds right away and hopefully the plants will go on to make nice bulbs. Some of my autumn-planted sets have done it this year. When you buy sets, go for the smaller ones, as they are far less likely to run to seed than the big ones that look temptingly like 'best buys.'
