Do you have any tips for sowing grass seed to cover bare patches on my lawn?
Brad: Remember to improve compacted ground before sowing grass seed. A mixture containing dwarf rye grass is ideal for hardwearing areas, while a shade mix is best for areas beneath trees and shrubs.
Mix two-parts moist compost with one-part grass seed into a bucket and keep in a warm place for a few days. When the seed starts to germinate, sow onto the bare patches and it will start to grow immediately.
First, rake over the bare areas to loosen the soil and allow air in, creating a suitable seedbed. Sprinkle the grass seed evenly over the area and rake it into the soil lightly. Cover with fleece or hessian sacking to protect the seed from birds, yet allow light in for germination. Use pegs to prevent the cover blowing away before the seed germinates.
