Q&A Fruit: Blackcurrant bush

I've just bought and planted my first blackcurrant bush. Does it need pruning?

Elisabeth Arter: After planting blackcurrant bushes, prune down to within 5cm (2in) of the soil level. This seems drastic, but it will encourage new growth from below the ground. Don't waste the cuttings - simply insert the stems you cut off into the ground with two buds above soil level to make new bushes by next autumn.
