What's the best way to grow strawberries in a small space?
Liz: An ordinary 25cm (10in) diameter terracotta pot will hold about three plants. Use a loam-based compost, such as John Innes, and plant up with pot-grown plants from a garden centre in spring or summer. Put them in sun and keep fairly moist; they will crop the following year. After flowering, net them (or move undercover) to protect the fruit from the birds and feed weekly with tomato feed. Any summer-fruiting variety will be fine. Plants should crop for two or three years before they need to be replaced. Or try a tower from Ken Muir .
Sarah B (web editor): Ken Muir is currently offering green or white self-watering towerpots (when ordered with 24 strawberry plants) with a £14 saving – they usually cost £31.95. Details correct as of January 07.
