An Ashford couple got creative when faced with a sloping patch of rough grass attached to their new bungalow

After living in a flat with no garden for 16 years, we moved into a bungalow on a corner plot. It had a sloping patch of rough grass and very little else.
We started at the rear of the garage and made raised beds and planted Salix 'Flamingo', pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana) and Photinia 'Red Robin'. To hide the garage bricks, we put trellis up the side and planted Pyracantha to cover it. The rest of the garden was divided by a winding path, and terraced behind a low wall; the beds contained roses, shrubs and clematis. In summer it is filled with bedding plants and in spring, bulbs and camellias.
We added a small pond, and a bench sits on the paving around it, so we can enjoy the view. Near the house, edged by the low brick wall, we have a patio, and on warm evenings, we love eating al fresco. We also delight in watching the visitors to our bird table, bird bath and feeder. We have also put in a hedgehog house and, yes, they have moved in! We watch them feeding on the patio every night.
