Freesias do naturally have very "ratty" looking foliage and the flowers do not last long. Sadly they are a plant that is best purchased as cut flowers and enjoyed, briefly, for their wonderful perfume. Sweet peas also come into the short lived category but we still grow and enjoy them. I assume you are growing them outside so I suggest you plant Tritelia 'Queen Fabiola' with them as this would follow on from the freesias. These can be purchased in the autumn at your local gardencentre. The small bulbs are planted in the sutumn and flower in June. They look like miniature agapanthus and also make good cut flowers. Alternatively you could sow an annual such as godetia or eschscholzia in the patches and these would flower later disguising the freesia foliage.
