I'd love to know what new varieties(to you,not necessarily the latest offerings)of veg you're all growing this season, and how you rate them.

I'm growing Black Beauty and Romanesco courgettes. Both are cropping well, but the Romanesco has the edge on both texture and flavour,in my opinion.
Toga red spring onions have done well and are very tasty.
Purple sprouting broccoli Spike have all gone to seed, but this may just be due to the freak weather.
Tomatoes Red Brandywine and Black Russian are growing well alongside my old favourite Ailsa Craig and Sungold, though as a north-eastern gardener it will be a while before they're on the table!
Sweetcorn Bodacious is growing brilliantly.
The plants are very vigorous and look really healthy.

Come on then!
It's your turn......

I love trying 'new' veg varieties and one that has been especially good for me this year is the old lettuce Tom Thumb, that I had never grown before. It needs little space and is perfect for someone living alone. For the second year I am growing the cherry tomato Ildi which produces huge crops of small thin-skinned yellow fruits New for 2007 the indoort/outdoor cucumber Swing is proving very good in my polytunnel. I cut 10 for sale at our village fete this morning

COURGETTES BY THE TONNE, BLAECK BEAUTY ARE DOING WELL.
MANGETOUT HAVE BEEN POOR, MASSES ALL IN ONE WEEK THEN NONE.

My first year of growing veg as never had a garden big enough before but have had loads of success as my husband traeted me to a greenhouse! I am growing tomatillos - I have never even tasted them but the plant is about 4ft tall and has loads of fruit developing - aparently they are used to make salsa verde! and later on they taste like a cross between a tomato and a grapefruit! Have you ever heard of them?

I am growing a selection of different Aubergines this year as they were so good last year, and also so easy to grow. Little Gem lettuce have been excellent so far, Asparagus peas didn't live up to expectations.
My greenhouse tomatoes are looking good and I picked the first Tigerella yeaterday. Outdoors my tomatoes are being devastated by Blight, I've never had this problem before and it looks as though 16 plants of mixed varieties will end up on the bonfire. I'm growing Jalapeno peppers and gherkins for the first time and looking forward to them cropping.

We're growing aubergine 'Black Beauty'; chillies, including the same varieties we grew last year, 'Prairie Fire', 'Tepin' and 'Habanero'; potato 'Duke of York'; carrot 'Early Nantes', plus parsley, onion sets (forget name) and a ridged cucumber, plus a cauli for April. Sorry, bad with names generally.

Using a gardening journal for the first time also, to write these essentials down. Marian, I'm glad your aubergines went well. I've made up an aubergine stew - the basis of, hopefully, plenty of aubergine meals....

I'm trying to grow aubergine 'Black Beauty' from seed as well this year. I bought a small unamed aubergine plant last year from a charity stall & it was doing well until a snail got past my copper tape barrier & chewed the stem! I'm also trying a tomato I haven't grown before called 'Tamina' from seed & was wondering about sending for some grafted tomato plants but they sem a bit expensive. Has anyone tried them? They claim that because they're grown on rootstock used by commercial growers that you get a stronger plant & much better yield.

Hi SueA

Would love to hear how you go with Aubergine 'Black Beauty'. I'll get the camera ready in case we get a bumper crop - or maybe do away with pride, and get photographic evidence of an aubergine disaster.

Lots of people I speak to can't see what's appealing about aubergine and get put off because they don't know how to cook it. So I'm pushing my eggplant all the way from the seedlings into my vege stew. 'Come on, my son....'

I'm not holding out much hope of a 'bumper crop' here Sarah, I'm having to grow my aubergine outside on the patio so have to hope for a sunny summer, not like last year. I've got a photo of what happened to my poor little aubergine plant last year when it got nibbled! I've only sown a couple of seeds because I've only got room for a couple of plants but I would be happy with just one aubergine -  just enough to put in a nice vegetable moussaka!

Looks fantastic! If I get a decent crop, I'm sending you aubergine in the post. Now look what you've started.....

It was fantastic until it dropped off! You can just see where the stem of the fruit was sheared along one side by the snail, it must have abseiled onto the plant from some overhanging leaves, nibbled the stem & then dropped off before it had finished it's meal! There wasn't much I could do with a slightly shrivelled 3inch aubergine!

Well, it's a start - that's what I say. Can't be any worse than our tomatoes last year.

New to the forum and my first post!!

I am growing Black Prince, White Wonders, Roma and tigerella tomatoes. Chillis, Melons and a selection of lettuces - all new to me!!

Have stuck to gardeners delight and money makers before so the heirloom types are a big adventure to me - so far so good and all from seed!!

Hi Dawn & welcome, the tom. varieties sound interesting, I've only tried Tigerella out of those. I tried to grow melons as well this year but my seedlings keeled over & died so I've given up as they need a long hot summer & I think it's too late to sow them & start again now.
