Nearly all my Cauliflowers, [earlier in the year] cabbages, sprouting Broccoli have all grown tall before laying on the soil. Is there a reason for this or is it normal. I have never seen pictures of veg doing this in catalogues. can this be avoided

Hi

The problem could be too much nitrogen in the feed. There are types of cabbages that can be grown to make walking sticks, with the stem having priority over the greens. They have high nitrogen feeds so the stems become woody. Try a more balanced feed 7.7.7 next time.

You also need to make sure you've firmed the ground around the plants properly with brassicas & some plants which naturally grow tall such as sprouting broccoli & sprouts can tend to lean over as they get tall anyway & may need staking to keep them upright especially if they're in a windy, exposed site.

 Bazza, Sue, Thanks,

I have just planted some spring greens that I started a while back in modules and I have planted slightly deeper than normal and I hope firmed them in a little better than before. As this was my first year with my three raised beds I am on a steep learning curve.

I must admit, I have fed all my beds quite heavilly as I have planted fairly closer than recommended by seedsmen on packets.
