I guess we will all have to hope for better weather next year,Have given up and cut down what remained of my toms for this season yet just a small amount of home grown fruit/veg makes the effort very worthwhile.

Besides green tomato chutney there was also a recipe on last weeks 'something for the weekend' for a green tomato ketchup and crispy eggs... could be worth a try if you have an abundance.

Hello

Like everyone else on this posting we have been disappointed with our tomatoes and some have succumbed to blight. We grew sub-arctic plenty as it was supposed to be able to set fruit under cool conditions and ripen early. Not the case however. We haven't managed to eat a single one that ripened outside. We have ripened quite a few in shoe boxes but you do need to check every day as once they start they ripen very quickly and one or two have rotted.

We have eaten some as 'fried-green tomatoes' and think they taste better than when ripened.

We also grew 'gartenperle' in hanging baskets and they have done very well on a south facing wall. Very tasty too! They are cherry tomatoes and  were a free seed packet with a magazine (maybe this one, I can't remember). I will certainly grow these again next year.

Hi

I can honestly say my toms are now coming to an end fruiting wise, and yet again I have had no problems other than some fruit splitting. I grow Gardeners Delight in a greenhouse and never grow them outside. I reckon I have another week or so and then its back to the supermarket rubbish. Ah well roll next spring.

We also had terrible blight on tomatoes on our allotment - it seemed such a waste pulling them up and destroying them all before they reached their peak.

I did have blight-free tasty tomatoes from 'Elegance' which is a Shirley type tomato I tried for the first time this year. They were in the greenhouse though. I would grow these again

Tried Ferline before which does have some resistance but not my favourite for taste.

I think it is worth trying again but perhaps spreading the risk eg range of varieties outside and underglass.

Last year I lost nearly all my tomatoes to blight but this year I've managed to salvage some by picking off any leaves showing signs of infection as soon as I spotted them. I grow all my tomatoes outside in pots & growbags, the growbag has a small plastic 'growbag' greenhouse over it which gives some protection from the spores but I've still had to pick leaves off the plants. The Italian plum tomatoes I had managed to resist blight for a while & I got a few nice ripe toms. off them but had to pick the rest green as the plants finally gave in. I still have some Gardener's Delight, Tamina, Old Brooks & Sparta toms. with green fruit on them but I'll have to pick them as it's starting to get frosty & they have very few leaves left on them, green tomato chutney anyone?
