hi i have grown some sweet peas this year and had loads of lovely smelling white flowers off them but they now have pods on what do i do with these? Also what do i do with the plants will they grow again next year or do they only grow for the one year?

Many thanks

Anne

I think that they only grow one year, but if you dry the pods and the peas inside then I think you should have seeds for next year but they won't be exactly the same varieties that you put in first because they would have crossed. You might get something new and exciting!

Good Luck

I didn't know that the seeds won't be the same varieties, thank you Julie for this info. I have grown sweat peas for the first time this year. But I'm reading this post a bit too late as I have already collected the seeds and separated the colors in different envelopes, oh well...

Mine were red and lila, I don't mind to get some white ones next year!

I am looking to grow sweat peas next year, as I have only been gardening for three years now and I am hooked...

Can I grow them from seeds outside as i have no greenhouse?

What are the best ones to buy and what colours?

Do they need a sunny wall/fence etc?

sweetpeas need something for the tendrils to attach themselves to as they grow.

I grew sweet peas for the first time this year - a large pot with two large 1/2 hoop bamboo canes about 3ft tall crossed over each other at the top and tied (these are quite cheap at your local garden centre) I covered the canes with pea netting (what else!) and had a fabulous sweet smelling, summer long, pot of multi coloured sweet peas.  This being my first try at sweet peas I grew them from purchased young plants.  I will keep the seeds from this year and am looking forward to trying them for next year - I'm hooked!

You can sow sweetpea seeds now in deep pots, root trainers or even the cardboard insides of toilet rolls stacked together in a tray or pot. Push the seeds about an inch deep & lightly water & then put them in a cool greenhouse, cold frame a sheltered spot in the garden  & they will grow over winter & give you strong plants to plant outside next spring. If you don't have any room or seeds now you can wait until next spring & either start the seeds off in pots & harden them off before planting out or sow directly in the ground or container in early spring  where you want to grow them outside.

I have an 8ft x 1ft bed of soil against a south facing wall, this is perfect for sweetpeas, and when they have started climbing, I sow radish, and lettuce as I need them, so making full use of the bed all summer.

I have a fence and trellis both South and East facing in my bcak garden and I think I will grow them from seed early in spring, as I already have clematis etc growing up both sides and they can cling on to them.  Thank you all for your help and suggestions, I will try to post a picture next year when the are in bloom.
