well tomorrow I am going to get some wood chip to level the area where my veg will sit dug up weeds and covered last month so I am now ging to try and mak it look bit more decent. Going to get some Polytunnels aswell to try and move some stuff outside. Planted some stuff too early but will sow again now and in a few weeks. As I am new went a bit sowing crazy, but also found that a lot of books and sites give mixed info about when to sow seeds, but I am deffinetly learning and thats what is all about, I would recommend anyone to try and grow some veg at one point as it is so much fun and frustrating but generally good

Going to transplant my lettuce and rocket in to troughs, tomorrow most have come up well, some a bit stringy then will sow some more in a few weeks, think I will separate my peppers as well getting fairly big (well 2" maybe) but think they will need their own pot soon. Gonna try and save some of the dwraf beans and corgette by transplating into deeper pots, as they have stretched a little. Carrots that are outside seem to be doing ok keeping them covered at night, and spring onion seem ok.

Dead chuffed just spotted some of my beetroot coming up, yeah. As I said new to all of this so a bit over zelous on the sowing front but am enjoying it, keep getting the mick taken out of me by friends but they won't be laughing when I can pick my own veg (fingers crossed) and they are stuck with the flavourless supermarket stuff

hi elizabeth
you are in front of me with your seed sowing, Im just looking at the packets
and deciding when to sow them.
I have sown some tomato seeds and keep looking at them to see if I can see the
"green" that says they are at least alive
and ive not killed them off.
OH wonders whats keeping me in the greenhouse so long ( but little does he know that this time next year it will be
FULL )

hi yall
I wouldn't worry about my sowing have been told I have sown some seeds way to early, still I will give it a go. I have been a bit over zelous with the plantings aswell, I have got so much, thought I would plant more give me a better success rate but they have all come up and are doing well.
I got myself two poly tunnels (pound land)to help warm up the soil and to protect the more tender crops when they go out. My lettuce and rocket survived their first night outside apart from the pot being knocked over, but looking good, also bought three raspberry canes, planted them outside yesterday. I wouldn't worry to much on being exact with sowing I think it is all a bit hit and miss depending on the area you live, I found a lot of mixed info of when to sow, so I just did it anyway, if they die I can always plant more.

Got the wood chip put it down looks good but I ran out right at the very end, its only a tiny bit but I now need to go get more that will need to wait till next week

Borlotto beans are coming up that I planted last week, not stretching as much as other beans, put them closer to the window this time, just waiting for tumbling toms to come up, lettuce and rocket is still looking good, though someone or something keeps knocking the trough over grrrrrr.

Transplanted peppers into larger pots last week and they are all looking good didn' expect all to come up as well or all to survive the transplant, but now have nine sitting on various windowsills, just dont have the heart to throw healthy ones away, I will be a nightmare when it comes to thining outside ha.
Think I will try and get a mini greenhouse, can't afford a large glass one, so will look aroung for any bargains.

so far so good all is still alive, giving some pepper plants to a friend I have about 9 at the mo so could do with reducing numbers plus trying to get more people into growing more veg, I think she is the first friend to say that she thinks it's cool.
She has asked for some seeds aswell, quite chuffed, spreading the love of veg growing. Tomatoes getting bigger, it's amazing how much all the plants grow in just a few days, I notice a difference somewhere every day. Going to transplant corgette and french beans into bigger pots again. At this rate I will be harvesting before they go outside.

Hi Gee Wiz
Gosh you've been busy! You are growing a lot of tender veg and we could still have late frosts up until mid/end May- so you might want to get some horticultural fleece or something similar.
Show/hide user stats
Yes have been a bit over ambitious and a lot too early, have some polytunnels, unsure if they will protect enough or if fleece would be better, going to keep everything inside for the moment, the nice weather seemed to cause the veg to sprout lots but has now disapeared, back to grey skies.
I have lettuce rocket , carrots, a few spring onoins and raspberries outside which all seem to be doing really well, looked a bit ill when they first went out but look ten times better now outside than they did inside.

I was reading a book on veg growing and for corgettes it says I have to fertilize the female flower with the male, though it said nothing on the seed packet, are most self pollinating or will have to do this, I don't understand what it means how do I tell the difference between a male and female flower?

brilliant, one of my tomatoes looks about ill but other three are quite big. well done on the rest, don't know much about flowers i'm afraid. If you fancy any other seeds let me know (veg wise) I have loads extra.
definetly like the idea, spend, spend, spend, with a wide eyed innocent look on your face so he can't say no or get annoyed. ha.ha.
well done on the toms keep me updated

Hi Gee wiz
Insects should do the pollinating for you. But early in the season or if it is cold and windy they won't be about so you can hand pollinate. Female flowers are those with a swelling at the base.

Hi Carol
Let us know how you get on and what takes your fancy at Harrogate - I think it is a great show but I haven't been for a while.

yeah my dwarf french beans are flowering looks nice aswell, still trying to post rest of pics on gallery so you will see them soon.everything still alive and well so far, carrots and spring onions that I had sown outside are starting to come up and the raspberries are starting to get a good bit of foliage on them all is going well really chuffed to see all that hard work paying off.
