Hi
I have had a middle size pond for a few years now.The year before last there was seven frogs in it. Last year there was only three. In all that time there has never been any frog spawn.Yesterday when walking near the pond I heard a splash.I though it was a bit early for frogs.Imagine my delight when further investigation this morning revealed a patch,if that's the correct discription,of frog spawn with the proud mum sitting almost on top of it.I'm going to be a daddy at last.Aint nature wonderful!!

Bazza, how great you've had a frog siting this early. I'm awaiting the arrival of my frogs and toads - not even this rain has drawn them out. Anyone, tomorrow is going to be warm and sunny apparently - so roll on Wednesday!

Hi
Yes I am well pleased. Had a lot of rain and the pond has overflowed a bit and there is some waterlogging nearby.Thought I might have lost the spawn but its still there. Now there are two frogs, looks like the old man has turned up as well, may be they will take it in turns to baby sit.
Only problem now is I was going to clean the pond out and thin out some of the plants. Ah well that will have to wait now.

Bazza Definitely keep all the plants as when the tadpoles arrive so will the hungry fish !!

Hi
I have not got any fish.I never got around to putting any in.Its just over two foot deep with tall yellow iris and smaller blue iris in the margins. There is also some grass and marsh marigolds.Got some white water lilies and some elodea, which seems to have died off.I have also got part of it reduced to about 3 inches for the birds to bath in. Lots of insect life. There is some muck starting to build up on the bottom, and as I said I was going to give it a clean up but the frog spawn has put that on hold.I was also going to put in a header pool or cascade, but that's on hold as well.I will put some fish in if I ever get it sorted out.

Hi Bazza
Congratulations, I'm sure you'll make a wonderful father!!

In may last house I had a pond and this eventually discovered by all the frogs in North Shields, last time I emptied it I counted 76 adult frogs! the biggest probelem was when the tadpoles developed into little frogs, every time I cut the lawn I had to go round with a bucket and pick up the little creatures, sometimes there were 150/200 of them, I couldn't bear the thought of cutting them up with the lawnmower or the strimmer so it was a necessary chore however it took a good 30/40 minutes over and above the time it took to mow the lawn so Baz if you have a lawn as well as the pond be prepared!!

Rgds

Good morning. At last, some nice weather on Sunday! During the course of planting out veg and building a path, Brian came across several toads and carefully rehoused them to continue with their hibernation. Our old tree-trunk log and black plastic mulch have come in very handy.

Hi
Thanks for your congratulations.Just wondered why after all these years they decided to offload there ofsprings now, and me getting all geared up for a pond spring clean.I do not have any lawn areas, turned them over to plants. My sister said exactly the same thing as you about frogs in the grass, but sadly some were not spotted in time and got minced.
That must be some kind of record 76 frogs.Perhaps we should ask Sarah B to run a poll and award a small prize for the person who has the most lol. You must be doing something right to get that amount in your garden. Well done.

Hi Bazza and all the frog enthusiats
A bit behind all you folks with your sitings but at last today I saw my first frogspawn. I expect you are into the tadpole stage.

Hi
I have had a bit of a set back.I think it was thursday, I went to have a look at the pond and before I got to it I could hear the male frog croaking. When I got to the pond both frogs were visible with the male I swear was looking at me and throwing out his chin pouch.I have never seen that before and was facinated by it.However when I took a quick look on friday both frogs had gone. Today saturday,I took another look and still no sign of them.Ok they may have gone off for a feed or a walk about but I am not sure if this is a sort of normal thing for them to do.I will keep a lookout for them and fingers crossed they will return. I will be very dissapointed if they dont come back.

Hi Bazza,

Don't panic with the wayward daddy frog as I have yet to actually see a frog but now have three large patches of frogspawn immaculate conception? I think not, but I did get a fright yesterday when a duck was on the pond busily doing something or other I chased it off, but am not sure whether ducks would eat frogspawn.

I never ever had any frogs or spawn in my pond for a couple of years so I acquired some spawn from a friend and put it in a sunken baby bath in the garden.

I now am inundated every year with spawn in my pond.

This year I counted 14 frogs all going at it.

They say frogs always return to spawn where they were born and I am sure these frogs are the result of the spawn given to me many years ago.

I am also yet to see a frog and wait patiently. If it's true Dinah that frogs return to spawn where they were born, I will hot-tail it to the neighbours, who have a big frog population, and see if I can get some spawn off them.

a few years ago I had spawn by the bucketload, and it has decreased yearly, but I believe it is because I now have a thriving newt population, I watched them killing and eating the frog tadpoles by flashlight at night, and think this is the reason why this year, I have seen a pregnant newt, but no frogs or spawn - however later in the summer last year when the weather got hot, frogs and a toad came to keep cool in the pond although never left spawn.

Hi Janet
That's really interesting because we have a large pond with thriving male and female newts but this year no frog spawn etc despite seeing frogs in the garden - that might be the explanation

Hi Bazza,

Saw my first tadpole today, have you had any sightings yet? It's a bit like hearing the first cuckoo. Anyone heard one yet?

I have lots of tadpoles but not in the main pond.

I think my koi eat the tadpoles as soon as they're free swimming. :(((

Hi
I've been looking for the last couple of days, no taddies and no sightings of the frogs. All I heard is a couple of croaks. Got down on my knees scanned the water like a vulture looking for a piece of meat, but nothing.Looks like a disaster to me. On the positive side if there is no offsprings to worry about I can now think about cleaning the pond out.I will give it a couple of days though just to be on the safe side. What a shame.
Bazza
